My name is Daniel Hawkins. I live in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. In 1993 I lived in a small rural town in North Carolina. I had a piece of land and a 1,400 sq. ft. house.

      I was on vacation in Florida visiting my son when I received a phone call from my neighbor telling me my house had caught fire and had burned to the ground. I returned home that day. What I saw sickened me. I crossed the yellow caution tape and gave myself a tour of what had been my safe place, my house. All I could think of was what do I do now?

     I called my insurance company and an agent came to my motel room the next day. He interviewed me and left me with a claims packet to be filled out. I took nearly a week to complete the paperwork. Most of that time I spent trying to remember what was in the house. I lived alone after my son moved to Florida so I figured I could easily remember all that I had. After I turned in the claims packet I turned my attention to putting my life back in order.

     Eventually my insurance claim was settled to my satisfaction. Although I now lived in a smaller home, it was time to replace the items I had lost. That was when it became apparent that I hadn't listed on the forms nearly as much as I had to replace. After I had replaced (over two years) all the items I hadn't listed, the total was in the thousands. And now, no reimbursement for those items. All I could do was hope I never go through that again.

     I hope my ordeal will make you think hard and long about the responsibility you have to yourself and your family to be prepared for what you hope will never happen to you.
